Amazon.com Product Description
The Lowrance iWAY 100M Portable GPS+WAAS Receiver is a versatile handheld GPS unit that can help you navigate cross-country interstates as well as back country trails and waterways. With its easy-to-read three-inch SuperTwist display, featuring an adjustable white LED backlit screen and 240 x 180 pixel resolution, the iWay 100 provides exceptional visibility not only during daytime hours but during the night as well. Lowrance has incorporated a precise 12-channel GPS+WAAS receiver into the unit for readings with an accuracy of up to three meters.

On-screen visual cues guide you through a route. View larger.

The Lowrance iWay 100M displays towns, roads, airports, and thousands of other destinations.
Should you want to customize your trip by avoiding toll roads and interstates--or even left- or right-hand turns--the iWay 100M automatically offers the most efficient directions. It will also recalculate trip routes if you get distracted and lose your way, and thanks to the built-in MMC/SD card slot and reusable memory card, you can save and retrace dozens of custom maps and routes.

The device stores more than just previous routes, however. It also comes with Lowrance's MapCreate CD-ROM custom mapping software, which includes an extremely detailed and highly accurate Navteq turn-by-turn database for the continental U.S. The searchable database includes more than two million points of interest, with restaurants, lodging, gas stations, emergency service, airports, shopping destinations, and more. The database and mapping options are essential for both short car trips and cross-country expeditions, as they find specific addresses rather than mere geographical points. Folks with a zest for detail will appreciate the dual processors, which let you scroll quickly and receive fast screen updates.

When you're ready to trade the road for the rivers or mountain trails, the iWay 100M can do double duty as a handheld unit for hikes, fishing, or hunting applications. And with the compact keypad, the 100M is easy to use, even with just one hand. Merely unplug the 12-volt power adapter and the two AA batteries (not included) take over. The unit is even waterproof to IPX7 standards, so you don't need to worry about rain showers or other water hazards.

Additional features include a 12-volt cigarette lighter power adapter with a built-in speaker and a 0.125-inch stereo jack, a suction-cup mounting bracket for windshield applications, and a MMC/SD memory card reader/writer (required to use the MapCreate software). The iWay 100M measures 2.55 by 5.59 by 0.96 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

2 out of 5 stars Warning: Lowrance GPS are designed by idiots   July 3, 2007
BoolaBoola (Whittier)
This is by far the worst designed GPS of the four I have owned. The more I have used it, the more I have come to despise it. As it is discontinued, I state this for the benefit of those who might consider buying a Lowrance GPS: the designers border on the incompetent.

For a start, did you know the base map of Alaska includes Anchorage and about a dozen towns nobody has ever heard of, but does not include Fairbanks, the second biggest city in the state? Not only that, the base map does not include a single road in Alaska. No roads. Period. (Yes, Alaska does have roads now.) Alaska is not included in the supplementary CDs, either. So no routing to or within Alaska.

Want to drive there through Canada? Bring a map. The voice routing will take you to your choice of two cities per province. In other words, the menu only lists the two biggest cities in the province. It does have roads though. So you can see the Alaska Highway within Canada. Until you get to the Alaska border. Then the line disappears.

If you turn the unit off after using it for a while, and then immediately turn it back on it will usually lock in very quickly. Good. But turn it on the next day and it will take a while to find the satellites, and then after locking on with strong signals to four or more, it will still take a couple of minutes to figure out where you are. Ouch! This is the worst performance I have seen in a GPS. The promo literature claims it has two processors, one for the screen and one for gps calculations. If so, they are both clodhoppers.

This unit does not record tracks. There is no line on the screen of where you have come from, so it is no help finding your way back, except as a general pointer if you saved a location. And you cannot label the location - it just has a sequential number, no symbol either. Better keep notes. Pretty pathetic.

You can select about a half-dozen informational items to go on the screen. But you cannot select the size or location of the items; the unit rearranges them each time you change them, with no rhyme or reason. And sometimes you will get one item filling the space of six items, taking up much of the screen. Ouch!!!

I have yet to figure out how to change the local time zone, so I am still on EST. There are a lot of basic GPS things this unit simply won't do.

The gps is accurate though, and will get you back to point A with a good signal to within say 10 feet. And it survived being out in the cold, though it won't work when it is really cold, no surprise. Battery life is good with NIMH.

The speaker function only works with the accessory plugged into a cigarette lighter. Directions within the Lower 48 were good. It recalculated route changes quickly.

But because of the bizarre gaffes in design I do not trust Lowrance, and will never buy another Lowrance again. They obviously did not finish working on this product, but shoved out onto the market anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent buy for $200 but needs $28 external antenna to be even better   October 9, 2005

I received this for my BD for $200 at www.ebuyer.com . It comes with 5-CD MapCreate6.3 Turn-by-turn, cigarette-lighter with speaker cord, 128MB SD card, special/encrypted USB SD-card reader, and RAM windshield suction mount. Found out quickly that it and my puny computer can't handle making custom maps bigger than 300MB (I bought 1g non-turbo SD PNY card for $35 AR and works great from www.buy.com ). SD reader needs software installation included in the 1st CD of the MapCreate6.3 (I have WinXP but also works with Win98/Me with included drivers). This GPS needs external antenna as pickup of satellites is poor otherwise (fine when walking around on clear sunny day, but in car needs the amplified antenna). I bought the Gilsson 32-51 db amplified, magnetized-base, 9 foot coaxial cord with MCX connector for $28 shipped from Ebay (search for GPSgeek). It boosts my pickup 10 folds !!! The GPS works well with waypoint creation, rerouting, voice-prompting (female, soothing voice), autozoom on turns, backlighted monochrome LCD. It does work with 2AA (NIMH recommended) but backlight is first to go with poor satellite reception when batteries are weaken. Route creation is pretty fast (5-10 sec.). Going off route gets reminder of "Off Route" on screen and voice and then new route is created. With 1g SD card I can hold eastern half of US. Needs 2g card for entire US. It does come with base map of US/Canada but major highways only. For detailed, street-level maps you must create your own which may take 1-6 hours depending on your computer horsepower (if it's too big and takes too long Windoze can lock up and ruin it for you--better stick with multiple smaller maps than one huge one). MapCreate 6 allows you to select maps via normal rectagle selecting tool or trapezoid, flexible selection tool. Overall good value if you don't need color, 3-D, and wants portability (like for walking around downtown).

Pros: Price, portability, AA-battery, backlighting (when battery fresh), clear, loud, volume-adjustable voice prompt with cigarette power adapter, good contrast.

Cons: Poor satellite reception out-of-box. Needs external, amplified antenna (Glisson highly recommended for $28--instead of Lowrance brand which costs $100), black and white only, and strong computer needed to create larger custom maps (stick with less than 300MB and you'll be OK), estimation of mapping software is not accurate for map size for SD card (100MB estimation will take 180MB to save to SD)

3 out of 5 stars Okay but not great.   September 2, 2005

This product has nice core features but is not as refined as some of the Garmin products. It is less expensive however. The GPS engine is not as sensitive as some others. It does not seem to keep the time or satalite positions when it is turned off (deffinatly when the batteries are removed - which is required to change the SD cards).

The Good:
nice size
Uses Standard SD Cards (Works with 1GB)
Comes with Map CD's Car Power/speaker cable
Comes with Ram Auto Mount
Routing with Voice
Speak button to repeat voice instructions
Uses 2 standard AA batteries
Affordable
Has more general features than some other auto units (waypoint management etc).

The Bad:
Rear Door construction and car cable connection flimsy may break
Maps use a lot of space, the program underestimates size required by almost a factor of two! A 400+MB map can take hours to make and then not fit on the SD card and you have to start over.
Copy protection, card registration, and problems with the LEI MMC/SD card reader (USB 1.1 not 2.0) which you have to use. Driver issues with XP 2.0
Some routing issues (saying turn left when right turn is needed and shown on map).
Turn preview is not near as good as on the Garmins

My Verdict.
So far I think it was a good purchase. I need a unit for occasional use when I get lost or travel. With a 1GB card the GPS holds Vancouver CA to the Mexican boarder all the way to the Arizona/New Mexico boarder (West half of Montana to the North). Still about 400 MB left for other maps. The use of regular batteries is better for intermittant use than units with LiIon packs.

The GPS also has an external antenna input which may be usefull as well. It is not as refined as I would like but the price/performance of the iway makes it worthy of consideration. I also have a Magellan Meridian Gold that I hope to try the routing maps on at some point to see how it compares to the Iway.
