I bought this unit accidently. I wanted the one with internal antenna. I'm sure there's no difference in the operation. Just don't have the room on a small boat for a external antenna. See my review on the upgraded model. 788 CI.

what a wonderful piece of gear! i believe that this is well worth the money. the color screen is far more detailed than any thing you could get with gray scale. instillation was a breeze. the amount of features and customization that are offered with this unit truly makes perfect for juat about anyone. i highly recomend this depth finder gps to anyone
